Icom IC-7100 HF/6/4/2/70

LAMCO Ham Radio News.

Icom IC-7100 HF/6/4/2/70 + D-STAR.

Icom Inc. have shown a new sample of a revolutionary HF/VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Mobile Transceiver with touch screen control called the IC-7100 at the Tokyo Ham Fair 2012.

The IC-7100 is a HF+6m+VHF+UHF all mode compact radio with an innovative slanted touch-screen LCD controller. A first for an Icom transceiver, the IC-7100 is designed to the 70MHz band in European versions where 70MHz is open to Amateur radio enthusiasts. To maintain its commitment to D-STAR, all versions of the IC-7100 will come with standard D-STAR DV mode.

Since the launch of the original IC-706 in 1995, Icom has been leading the market of HF/VHF/UHF multi-band mobile radios. The popularity of vehicular mounted amateur radios may not be as high as the times of the IC-706 series, but the IC-7100 has been carefully designed to reignite Amateurs’ interest in mobile communications and brings digital communication opportunity to a wider range of radio Amateurs.

Planned Features include
• Slanted front separated controller with large touch screen dot matrix LCD (controller cannot be attached to body front)
• Speaker is self contained inside the controller
• Full mode (SSB, CW, AM, FM, RTTY decode) and D-STAR DV
• HF (100W) / 50MHz (100W) / 70MHz (50W) / 144MHz (50W) / 430MHz (35W) (Note: Power may be different according to version. The 70MHz band is available for some versions only)
• Lower current consumption / cooler operation (compared with the IC-7000)
• SWR meter function also works for VHF and UHF bands
• Remote power on / off
• IF DSP for filtering / interference removal / noise reduction
• SD memory card slot, voice recording
• USB Audio In / Out, remote control
• +/- 0.5ppm frequency stability
• 505ch memory channels

Kinetic Avionics Press Relase.

Kinetic Avionics to release lightweight, portable, price busting hardware.

You heard first from LAMCO.

Great news Chris, please keep us informed.

Kinetic Avionics Limited today announced the forthcoming release of two new, low cost, receivers for the 1090MHz ADS-B and SDR markets design to compete and undercut competitors such as AirNav, whilst delivering Kinetic traditional quality. These will be released at the same time and will come complete with Basestation software and other utilities for the Windows and Mac platforms.

The "BLUE PUCK" is a 1090 MHz ADS-B receiver as used in the SBS-3. It comes complete with a 1090 MHz antenna and connects to the computer using a micro-USB lead. The "BLUE PUCK" will allow existing users to move from home to the field swapping between their SBS-3 and "BLUE PUCK" without having to make any configuration changes to their BaseStation setup.

The "BLACK PUCK" is a single receiver SDR, operating from 27 MHz to 980 MHz, using the same technology as the SBS-3. Providing digital / audio over USB and or reception of ACARS , AIS and broadcast stations.
Again, this device is intended to support existing SBS-1 customers and new customers alike.

Both devices will be very competitively priced to undercut competitors and offer the class of functionality provided by the SBS family of devices.

R.A.T.S. Radio Rally

The R.A.T.S. Real Radio Rally is this Sunday. 'Rugby'.

We will be there weather permitting.

Talk-in GB5RRR
Sunday 19 August 2012

We hope all who attended in 2011 enjoyed the day, despite the damp start.  However, it soon brightened up and got warm.  As seems to be our tradition, it was a bit squally setting up the afternoon before and then wet in the evening!  There were no complaints so we assume the improved road signage in the vicinity was adequate.  A few used the talk-in on S22 but none on GB3ME.  The APRS experiment worked well with good range.

Please note our Rally is still on a SUNDAY

Princethorpe College is about 7 miles south-west of Rugby.  This new open-air site has well kept grounds with proper porcelain loos nearby and we have direct control over the food provision, which will be there as usual!  Access roads are good and the site is not far from the A45.

As usual a talk-in station on 2m (S22 145.550 MHz) and 70cms GB3ME (RB06) will be provided from 08:00 until 12:00, to aid navigation to the venue.  It is also intended to run 2m APRS again, once we are setup on Sat 18th until the end of the Rally on the Sunday afternoon

The Society Committee have always emphasised that this is a REAL Radio Rally.  Therefore we don’t have any of the big traders and positively encourage the smaller specialist traders to attend.  The Rally is the best place to get all those little items that you always run out of, plus it’s a haven for homebrew enthusiasts with loads of “junk” that will get that project finished at the right price.  There are always some good value computer bits and pieces.  Don’t forget to visit the club stand, (the one with the RATS Banner!) exchange greetings and get a great bargain - you’d be surprised what we collect over the year(s) and have to sell, to make space for more stuff!  Please note that there is no provision for waste disposal on site, so all traders and visitors must take their rubbish home with them.

Full details of the booking arrangements and contact details are available on the linked RATS Rally 2012.pdf and a complete set of excellent instructions on how to get there are here: - New Dir to Princethorpe.pdf

Please note, access to the College is from the B4453 road which passes to its south, not from the the A423.  CV23 9PY is the suggested postcode to use for your ‘satnav’ to get you onto the B4453 (please see Directions link above).  If coming from Princethorpe village, carry on about 200 yards to the west, where the College entrance will be found on the north side of a 45 degree left hand bend.

Icom IC-7000

Icom IC-7000 now back instock.

HF/50MHz/VHF/UHF mobile transceiver
Stylish and compact, the IC-7000 is the first radio in its class to have IF DSP. In fact, with features such as digital IF filter, digital twin PBT and manual notch filter the IC-7000 offers unparraled performance not seen in a radio in this class before. Usability has also been enchanced with the incoporation of a 2.5 inch colour TFT display, eight direct access buttons and a detachable head for vehicle mounting. In short, the IC-7000 symbolises great leaps in performance, features, operability and design.
2 x DSP
There are two times the DSP in the IC-7000 that will leave many base station rigs in the noise! While it is too early to list all the great features, here are a few to keep you talking!

Improved AGC loop performance
With Multiple AGC loops, you will never experience AGC pumping from a signal filtered out by the DSP! The digital IF filter and manual notch filter are included in the AGC loop, so you will never encounter AGC blocking. IC-756PROIII and IC-7800, middle, fast for each operating mode.

Digital IF filters
All the filters you want at your fingertips! You will never have to purchase Optional filters as the IC-7000 has 41 different filter widths. You just dial in the width you want and select whether you want a sharp or soft filter shape for SSB and CW modes. Then to pull-in the weak ones, a quick turn of the concentric twin PBT knobs, allow you to either narrow the IF passband, or shift the entire passband to eliminate the QRM.

2 x MNF (Manual Notch Filter)
Pull out the weak signals in crowded band conditions with Icom's NEW two-point MNF manual notch filter. Apply 70 dB of rejection to two signals at once! Notch width is adjustable ¡V wide, medium, and narrow ¡V and an auto-tuning notch filter is available, too.

Digital voice recorder (DVR)
Record your callsign, CQ, or other information in 4 transmit playback memories with alphanumeric labels. A total of 90 seconds is available for the four memories. A front panel REC control allows you to record incoming signals, too! The DVR makes portable contesting or mini-expeditions a breeze!

Flexible installation with detachable panel
Smaller than the IC-706MKIIG, the IC-7000 measures only 167(W)x58(H)x180(D) mm*1. With the detachable front panel*2 many installation possibilities are available.

Remote control Microphone
The supplied HM-151 remote control microphone allows you to control often used functions of the IC-7000. This includes band hopping with Icom's Triple Band Stack registers.

2-mode band scope
The band scope function lets you watch conditions around the band. In Centre mode the band scope is centred on the receiving frequency. In Fixed mode the band scope sweeps a fixed range.

2.5-inch colour TFT display with TV screen receive capability
The IC-7000's display presents numbers and indicators in bright, concentrated colours for easy recognition. You can choose from 3 background colours and 2 font styles to suit your preference. Not only does the display provide radio status, but you can watch NTSC M or PAL B on VHF-TV channels!*

One-touch operation
Eight of the most-used radio functions are controlled by dedicated function keys grouped around the display for easy visibility. One quick touch turns the function and off. A longer touch activates adjustment of the functions setting.

Memory Keyer
The internal memory keyer provides 4 memories for station information or contest exchanges, calling CQ and call sign with up to 55 characters for each memory. The keyer also performs automatic repeat and automatic contest serial numbers.

IC-7000 Additional Features

  • Selectable main dial tension from heavy, light and click

Kenwood TS-2000e

Kenwood's mighty TS-2000e shack in a box is still a hot seller.

Kenwood TS-2000E
This one transceiver covers the HF/50MHz/144MHz/440MHz/1200MHz (1200MHz is optional with UT-20) bands (SSB, CW, FSK, FM and AM modes), with output of up to 100 watts (440 MHz: 50 watts; 1200 MHz 10 watts). Since it is equipped with independent 144/440MHz sub band reception (AM/FM modes only), simultaneous reception on two bands is possible: HF by V/U, V by V, U by U and V by U.
A typical application might be to gather local information on 144/440 MHz at the same time as using HF for long range operations. A 'Black Box' model (without the control panel) is also available: this can be used in a vehicle with a mobile head, or controlled by a PC (software provided).

IF DSP
The transceiver is equipped with an IF DSP for main band use(AF DSP for sub bands), TS-870 technology has thus been adopted for all-mode applications - VHF and UHF as well as HF. The combination of digital IF filters and IF DSP slope tuning results in enhanced versatility. With digital IF AGC (controlling IF gain via DSP), it is possible to set the time constant separately for each mode. Also, the IF auto-notch function makes it easy to remove interference while automatically tracking with DSP-based adaptive filtering. Additionally, the AF stage beat cancel is capable of eliminating multiple beats at the same time; manual operation (manual notch for dealing with a single wave) is also permitted, which is convenient for CW use. For noise reduction there is a choice of NR1 (line enhancer for SSB), and Kenwood's original NR2 (SPAC), which is popular amongst CW operators. As with the TS-570, the operator can make use of CW auto tuning, while the availability of a DSP for SSB/CW/FSK/AM variable demodulation puts the transceiver a cut above analogue equipment.

TNC
Kenwood's own 2-chip TNC (1200/9600bps) enables sophisticated data communications (excluding ARPS). Packet cluster information, so vital for HF operators, can be displayed on the LCD. Moreover, this data can be used for automatic tuning, though it is not possible to connect to a node station using the internal modem. And as DX cluster information received on a sub band can be used instantly for the main band setting, the transceiver operator has an advantage when tracking sought after stations.

The Kenwood Sky Command Systems (KSS) II is even better. Whereas it has been necessary to use two FM transceivers - the commander and the transporter - the latter is now effectively built into a transceiver (TH-D7A or TM-700A) is needed to conduct HF operations by remote control.

Other features

Built in auto antenna tuning (HF/50MHz) with preset memory.
Auto tracking satellite functions (cross mode compatible) using IF DSP
± 0.5ppm high stability oscillator (-10°C - +35°C)
Mobile head remote controller (option) for vehicle installation.

Green Light Labs LLC, GPS-710 coming to LAMCO

Green Light Labs GPS-710

£109.95 + P&P

 Product Highlights
  • Simple plug-and-play design (less than 5 minutes to install)
  • Clutter-free attachment to TM-D710 Operation Panel
  • High performance GPS engine
  • Very low power: 0.2 Watts
  • Always-on design for instantaneous radio start up
  • RJ45 jacks employ integrated ferrites for improved noise immunity
  • Fully shielded, high quality jumper cables
  • Fully FCC Class B tested
  • RoHS compliant
Product Overview
The GPS-710 is a custom built, uncluttered, plug-and-play solution for adding a stand-alone GPS to your Kenwood TM-D710 or RC-D710 radios. It uses an excellent 20 channel SiRF-III GPS chipset (with WAAS, ENGOS, and MSAS augmentation) that can acquire GPS lock from a cold start in well under 60 seconds. The active internal antenna has proven to be extremely capable of maintaining GPS lock, even in very unfavorable mobile installations.  The GPS remains powered even while the radio is off, and provides data immediately when the radio is powered on - instantaneous position lock.  The GPS-710 draws about two-tenths of a Watt from the line, and does not present a significant standby drain to an automobile battery.

As you can see from the photo below, the GPS-710 is hidden well behind the Operation Panel. The GPS-710 is attached to the Operation Panel with automotive-grade "high bond" adhesive tape, designed to maintain a strong bond in temperatures up to 200F, which is well above the operating temperature limits of the radio. For anyone not wanting to mount the GPS-710 to the back of the Operation Panel, optional separation kits (6" and 24") are available.

The shielded serial jumper uses molded right-angle connectors with an integrated strain relief. The data jumper uses a double shielded cable that follows the Kenwood design for signal shielding. The wires are cemented into the RJ-45 (CAT6) connectors before being crimped into place and the resulting connection is extremely reliable.  Every GPS-710 is individually tested on a TM-D710 before packaging.

The GPS-710 is FCC Class B certified as a peripheral device to the TM-D710/RC-D710.  The RJ-45 jacks on the GPS-710 employ high quality EMI filters, so additional ferrites are not commonly needed.  An open "pass-through" 2.5mm serial jack is provided, as can be seen below, so that an external device can be attached to the TM-D710 and/or GPS-710 serial output signals.  An example of attaching the GPS-710 to a laptop (APRSISCE, APRSPoint, UI-View32) is given here.

The mounting bracket and COM port are both completely usable with the GPS-710 installed.
